In terms of Sections 11 to 13, the Engineering Profession Act empowers the ECN to register persons in certain prescribed categories of registration. The categories are: Professionals, or graduates in training.
The categories in which a person may register are:
Full registration, divided into:
- Professional Engineer, who should hold a professional bachelor of engineering or bachelor of science in engineering degree at NQF Level 8 (as a homogeneously continuous program, and not as a result of add-on programs) from a recognized university that followed a scientific and analytical structure of learning as applied to a broad spectrum of professional engineering, plus at least 3 years of relevant engineering work experience. Bachelor of technology or similar qualifications that may have been pegged at NQF Level 8 by the NQA, for any reason, are not equivalent to B.Eng. or BSc.Eng., by the nature and structure of admission, learning and curricula composition, and will therefore not be considered under the Professional Engineer category. These qualifications rather fall under the Incorporated Engineer category.
- Incorporated Engineer, who should hold a bachelor’s degree or bachelor of technology degree at NQF Level 7 from a recognized tertiary institution that followed an applied/practical and technologist structure of learning as applicable to specialized or specific sub-disciplines of fields of engineering, plus at least 3 years of relevant engineering work experience
- Engineering Technician, who should hold a national diploma or equivalent, at NQF Level 6, from a recognized tertiary institution, plus at least 3 years of relevant engineering work experience
In training registration, divided into:
- Engineer in training, who should at minimum hold a professional engineering degree or equivalent at NQF Level 8 from a recognized university
- Incorporated Engineer in training, who should at minimum hold a bachelor of technology degree or equivalent at NQF Level 7 from a recognized tertiary institution
- Engineering Technician in training, who should at minimum hold a national diploma or equivalent, at NQF Level 6, from a recognized tertiary institution
A person may not practice in any of the categories, unless he or she is registered in that category.
The ‘In Training’ category only provides for the registration of persons who meet the academic requirements for registration in the Professional Categories and who are undergoing professional development under the supervision of engineering professionals.
